Halloween 2009 - Trunk or Treat!

For Halloween this year, we participated in our town's Trunk or Treat event that takes place in a local park. I had no idea it was as big event as it was! We hosted a 'trunk' with our friends and handed out candy to trick or treaters from 5-9. Imagine a continual, slow moving line of costumed kids and adults that lasts for approximately 4 hours! I heard that the number in attendance was about 4,000! Halloween on steroids, pretty epic.

Our trunk was a Western theme, complete with bales of hay and entertainment:






So last year Nathan was a Lion. This year he was a Tiger. Any guesses what he will probably be next year? By that time, he may have a personal opinion of what he wants to dress up as but if not...I'm going for the Bear! He makes one cute little Tiger though.





When we first got to the park, he clinged to me and was very slow to warm up (as in most new situations). Once he felt comfortable, we walked down a portion of the line and he just mimicked the other kids. I pointed out the person to hold his basket up to and he would say "Trik or Trea".





While we were at our 'trunk' he helped pass out candy and for each person he gave candy to he would continue to say "Trik or Trea". It was pretty funny. Pretty Cute.




And while we hung out at our trunk, he noticed his BFF with a sucker.

Naturally, he requested the same and he got to eat his first Tootsie Pop! A sticky mess - never again.





Someone in particular was not so happy that the Texas game was on during the Trunk or Treat event. However, he paused for a minute to dress up (the hat) for a quick picture, but that was the extent of it for you know who.


It was a fun night but what's interesting is what leaves the biggest impression with a 2 yr old.
Not the candy. Not the costumes. Not trick or treating. It was a Fire Juggler who entertained the crowd in this area.


Later in the night, Nathan would yell "Mommy, Mommy! Watch!" He would then twirl a big glow stick (in the very first picture) in the air or pretend to pass it under the leg, imitating the Fire Juggler. I don't have a picture of the Fire Juggler or Nathan imitating him but it was the best part of the night. As we headed home and Nathan dozed off in the car seat, eyes closed, he held on to the big glow stick, twirling it around in circles. It was absolutely PRECIOUS!

It was much fun and good times to be remembered until the next year!

The Pictures You Don't See...

As I edited and organized pictures from our vacation tonight, I found myself getting some good laughs from some of the 'bad' pictures I still had. So, in the spirit of sharing a good laugh here are some of those pictures!

"Hello Father, I noticed you have sat down with a bowl of ice cream. Oh how I love ice cream."


"Father, would you to share a bite of your ice cream with your one and only son?"


"Father, I fear you are ignoring me. I shall stand here with an open mouth so there is no misunderstanding of my wishes."


"Yes! You now see me standing here with my mouth open! I say, will you share your ice cream?"


"Ummmmmm. I do love ice cream."


"Oh what a good day!"


"A good day, indeed."

17th Annual Susan G. Komen Walk for a Cure

It's very hard to articulate the feelings around participating in an event like this. When thousands of people come together to support a cause, it's moving. When tens of thousands of people are like minded in supporting a cause, it's overwhelming. When hundreds of thousands of people set aside differences in racial, ethic and social classes to support a cause, it's simply powerful. The Susan G. Komen Walk for a Cure event is all of these and so much more. Here are some pictures from my first time to participate in the Susan G. Komen Walk for the Cure, this past Sunday.

I had to climb a tree just to get these shots. I wanted to capture the magnitude of people in attendance. No matter which way I looked, it was just a sea of people as far as the eye could see in every direction.


My friends are front and center in this next shot. The solid pink shirts, example bottom left, are reserved for Breast Cancer Survivors.

And then I would see something; a T-shirt, a sign, a couple holding hands and sudden emotions would fill my eyes with tears...just because.

In closing, I wanted to capture on video, who each of us were walking or running for, so here's that little clip. You're allowed to laugh at the fact that I was trying to 'direct' this video and be in the video at the same time! hahaha!



By the way, the walk was in downtown Phoenix, so I was able to get a quick snapshot by the Capital building ... Texas readers, try not to laugh, seriously.
